With a long zoom 35mm equivalent of 27.5-207mm, this lens, is ideal for a variety of applications, including portraits, wildlife and sports. Image quality is maximised thanks to the aspherical lens element, which helps reduce spherical aberration. It’s weather resistant, so you can use it in damp conditions without worrying about lens damage, with the SP (Super Protective) coating repelling water and oil from the lens itself and making cleaning easier. The Quick-Shift focus system makes it easy to instantly switch to manual focus operation, so you can further refine the automatic focus for your own artistic vision.
A compact, lightweight and weather resistant lens, the SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR features a versatile zoom range ideal for many subjects from landscapes to portraits or sports.
Introduced in September 2010, the Pentax SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL DC WR Lens has turned into one of the set lenses offered with Pentax DSLR cams. Covering focal lengths comparable to 27.5-207mm in 35mm format, its 7.5 x zoom variety matches a vast array of shooting conditions. A streamlined weather-resistant building with 6 layers of sealing within the lens allows it to hold up against moist conditions (including mist and light rain or spray).
The optical design is fairly complicated, including 13 aspects in 11 groups and consisting of 2 aspherical lens components and one ED aspect. Exclusive Super Protect (SP) coating pushes back dust, moisture and grease, making the lens simpler to clean. The lens accepts 62 mm diameter filters and features a petal-shaped plastic lens hood plus front and end caps.
‘All-in-one’ zoom lenses are popular with professional photographers who desire a single, do-everything lens on a capable electronic camera body. Tourists, household photographers and snapshooters will discover its medium-wide to medium-tele variety beneficial for subjects as diverse as picture, landscapes and household events.
Fitted to among the Pentax weatherproof DSLR bodies (such as the K-S2 we utilized for our tests), it will match a wide variety of outdoor professional photographers and is rugged enough to be continued bushwalks or treks. Internal focusing keeps the front aspect from rotating throughout focusing, making it possible for hassle-free use of angle-critical filters, such as polarisers.
Autofocusing is driven by a Direct Existing (DC) micromotor, which is reasonably fast and peaceful. The integrated Pentax Quick Shift system enables manual focus over-ride in single-shot AF mode by just turning the focusing ring.
Relatively small and light for its zoom variety, the DA 18-135mm lens is very well developed for its price, with a nice balance in between metal and premium plastic parts. It has a strong metal mounting plate and the zoom system extends two inner barrels which are quite tightly contained. This lens has just two control surfaces: a 45 mm large zoom ring just behind the bayonet installing for the lens hood and a much thinner (10 mm large) manual focusing ring. Both rings have textured rubber cladding, the focusing ring being the rougher of the two.
