The Canon EF 55-200 mm F 4.5-5.6 II USM lens provides exciting results in a versatile focal range. Opening possibilities, the lens gives the user a chance to expand their interest without the cost of other lenses. The well-built casing make it the perfect tool for the photographer exploring their interests.
A simple lens with a plastic body, made for Canon’s Rebel series of cameras, inclusive of film and digital SLRs. The lens incorporates an ultrasonic focusing motor, which usually means very fast and very quiet autofocus. The lens is small and light, an excellent companion for the light cameras they were designed for.
However not designed specifically for digital cameras, this lens is a good choice for film and digital SLR owners. Its light weight and fast AF will not disappoint. A Digital Rebel Kit owner need only buy this lens to cover nearly every type of event he’s likely to encounter.
The build of this lens feels far too lightweight to inspire any confidence in its ability to last. The lightness is attributable to the very simple creation. Left is any appearance of a manual focus ring although, once switched to Manual with the small slide switch on the left of the barrel, manual operation is possible by turning the front element. It is not possible to override the autofocus by this method though.
As with most zoom lenses in this class, the better performance is achieved at the shorter end of the zoom range with a steady ruin as the focal length increases. This lens, however, manages to control this phenomenon fairly well, especially in the centre of the optic with more reduction noticeable toward the edge of the frame. This does not promise well for film or full-frame sensor users where results are showing poorly on a cropped sensor.
