Additionally, a lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) is used for notably smooth, quiet, and precise autofocus performance.
This Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens may be a bit slower on the wide end than its predecessor, but the lens’ overall size has been reduced by 20%, and Canon claims will offer the same image quality as the previous version, along with four stops of vibration reduction.
Canon 18-55mm IS STM is a basic zoom for Canon’s 1.6x cameras. It has both Image Stabilisation to eliminate the need for a tripod, and has the new STM silent autofocus motor to help with quiet, smooth autofocus while rolling DSLR video.
